IS FISHING YOUR INTEREST? Weipa has earned the reputation of being amongst the best fishing regions in Queensland, Australia. Fishing is generally so good here that Weipa has become known as the "Sportfishing Capital of Queensland". If you are an keen angler, then this region should be on your "must visit" list. Here you may catch many of the prime recreational sporting species including the famous barramundi. Others include barracuda, bream, cobia, coral trout, estuary cod, fingermark, giant and golden trevally, grunter, mangrove jack, queenfish, parrotfish, sea perch, tuna, red emperor, saratoga, threadfin salmon, and many more. For those anglers who don't bring their own boat and or trailer you can hire trailers, boats, trailer and boat combinations here at Weipa. Charter fishing boats and fishing guides are available for hire - book early to avoid disappointment. Cold storage of your catch is available at the Weipa Camping Ground which also has supplies of ice and bait - boat hire and boat charters can also be arranged by the Weipa Camping Ground staff. The Weipa Camping Ground / Caravan Park welcomes anglers and provides accommodation for all, including backpackers, caravaners, motor homers, recreational and 4WD vehicle enthusiasts.
